VietJet Places Order for 100 Boeing 737 Max 200s

VietJet Air, the low-cost Vietnamese carrier has just signed an order for 100 Boeing 737 Max 200s, valued at just a shade under $11.3 billion list price. The order made VietJet Air just the second customer to commit to the high-density variant offered by Boeing and was signed during a visit by US President and Commander in Chief Barack Obama to Hanoi. President and Chief Executive of VietJet Nguyen Thi Phoung Thao revealed that the tremendous investment into a fleet of Max 200s is all part of VietJet Air’s strategy to accommodate the growth of VietJet’s coming international route network which now includes long haul flights.

The jets are to be delivered between the year 2019 and 2023 which will help boosts the budget carrier’s fleet to more than 200 aircrafts by completion of the delivery in 2023. Per Flightglobal’s Fleets Analyzer, VietJet is shown to be operating a flew of 28 Airbus A320s and four A321s. VietJet also has another 85 A320-family aircrafts on order which includes 63 of the re-engined “neo” variants.

All Boeing 737 Max aircraft are powered by the CFM International Leap-1B engines while the Max 200 variant is based on the original 737 Max 8. It features a completely reconfigured exit row arrangement that allows it to accommodate up to 200 passengers in a single-class arrangement.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner beamed with pride as he lauded that Boeing is

proud to once again play an integral role in advancing Vietnam’s aviation industry.

VietJet Air is an international, low-cost budget airline from Vietnam established in December 2011, it became the first privately owned new-age airline to be established in Vietnam and was granted its initial approval to operate by the Vietnamese Minister of Finance back in November of 2007.

VietJet Air is owned by Sovico Holdings and HDBank. Concurrently, Boeing has also secured a commitment from Ryanair for an order of 100 737 Max 200s and will provide carriers like Ryanair with more potential revenue due to the increase of 11 more seats and 5% lower operating costs per trip due to the added capacity.
