NSN (NATO Stock Number) Search
In the civil aviation, aerospace, and defense industries, there are so many parts, manufacturers, suppliers, buyers, sellers, and so on, that it can be hard to maintain all of them. This is where NSNs come in. NSN stands for National Stock Number and is a unique code given to a part that is commonly produced, stocked, issued, and used throughout the federal supply system. The coding system was created during World War II to provide a universal language for allied forces to exchange simple parts.
Each NSN is a 13-digit code constructed like this: 1560-00-005-3691. The first four numbers denote the Federal Supply Class (FSC) the part belongs to. The next two digits refer to the part’s country code, where the part was first codified. The final seven digits are a unique number given to each part. NSNs are assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) of the United States. The NSN is issued after a meticulous process of cataloging, during which the part is analyzed, given an FSC, and finally, given its NSN. NSNs are recognized by all members of NATO, and many other foreign and domestic entities throughout the world.
