3 Allies Join European Mid-Flight Refueling Station for More Efficient Worldwide Long Range Missions
On February 16 2017 Belgium, Germany and Norway’s defense ministers all signed a declaration of intent to be a part of the European multinational fleet of Airbus tankers. The decision was made to be able to full their aircrafts during longer missions more effectively without landing.
The European fleet was established by Netherlands and Luxemburg to help European fleets be able to extend their flights and not having to land. The idea was launched by the both countries in July of the year 2016 and was used first used for a pair of Airbus A330 Multi Role tanker transporter aircraft that has been proposed to be delivered in the year 2020.
Along with the contribution of other countries that pertain to the European group it will allow the fleet to be increased to up to 8 fully equipped aircrafts.
During the ceremony for the signing of the declaration, Rose Gottemoeller, the NATOs Deputy Secretary General stated,” is multinational cooperation through NATO is a clear way for countries to significantly improve their armed forces while ensuring the greatest value for money for their taxpayers.”
NATO not only believes that this new move will be a great way improve their way of mid-air fueling and a better way to not rely on the US for their refueling tankers.
This investment goes beyond then just refueling aircrafts for long range mission but is also a great way for to create a better relation between the NATO and the European Union. A great chance to enhance the NATOs air campaigns such as the ones carried out in Kosovo and Libya.
