Russia to Supply Egypt with 46 Ka-52K Naval Attack Helicopters
Russia recently struck a deal with Egypt to supply the Egyptian Navy with 46 Ka-52K naval attack helicopters to equip the two Mistraal-class helicopter carriers acquired from France. The Ka-52K is a naval attack variant of the Ka-52 alligator attack helicopter. It has distinguishing features such as a folding stub-wings, folding rotor head and reinforced landing gear. In addition to that the Ka-52K has weapons pods which are capable of holding and launching Kh-38 and Kh-35 cruise missiles.
The two Mistraal-class helicopter carriers were acquired by Egypt from France in October 2015. France initially planned on purchasing Russian aircrafts but canceled their sale agreement due to the European Union sanctions imposed on Russia following its recent military actions in Ukraine. The ships are designed to each carry up to 16 Ka-27/29 Helix anti submarine/assault or Ka-52 strike helicopters and after removal of Russian radio systems installed on the two carriers was completed in November, are now ready for use. Deliveries for the helicopters are expected to be completed in two years.
Russian Helicopters Director-General Alexander Mikheyev recently stated, in a statement marking the end of the 2015 trading year, that "In this knotty [global business] situation, we have managed to keep up the financial parameters reached previously and to broaden the presence of Russian helicopter technologies in the world market. In the outgoing year, new contracts were signed between Russia and foreign helicopter users. For instance, a large agreement for delivery of 46 Ka-52 Alligator helicopters has been signed with Egypt through state-owned weapons trading company Rosoboronexport."
