Danish Defense Ministry Backs US Fighter Jet Purchase from Lockheed Martin

The special office in charge of procuring new aircrafts for The Danish Defense Ministry has comprised and delivered a final and comprehensive analysis which approves of the recent purchase by the United States for a batch of Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth multi-role fighters. The ministry office which has spent the last nine years studying and analyzing Denmark’s options in regards to renewals of its aging F-16 fight jets fleet, has deduced and concluded that the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics-manufactured aircraft is superior to the Boeing’s Super Hornet fighters. This report was leaked by Radio24syv public broadcaster who has assured that the findings come from multiple reputable aviation sources. Sources at the Ministry of Defense has estimated that Denmark needs at least 28 new jets in order to keep an operational air force.

According to conservative estimates, the total cost of the fleet upgrade could come to as much as 100 billion kroner or over 15 billion per aircraft over the jet’s entire 30 year lifespan which includes the necessary maintenance costs. And while the move has been largely endorsed by most of the influential parties within the Danish parliament, it is not without opponents. Those in opposition has criticized the endorsement as unnecessary and a frivolous expenditure in the face of tightened welfare expenditures and the declining economic growth rate of the last several years. Proponents of the fleet upgrade points to the increased generation of revenue the upgrade would provide along with Denmark being able to field a fully functional, operational and improved air force.

In April earlier this year, the Danish Parliament approved of the decision to strengthen the country’s military commitment to the anti-terrorist and counter actions in Syria and Iraq currently being spearheaded by the US. Denmark pledged support by providing F16 jets as well as transport aircraft and Special Forces to the cause. Lockheed Martin’s F-35 is descended from the X-35 which won the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program for winning design and actually resembles the F-22 Raptor. The F-35 was designed to be America’s premier surface to air missile killer and is uniquely equipped with synthetic aperture radar integration techniques, cutting edge processing power and advanced target recognition capabilities.
