What are Rod Wipers?

Hydraulics are extremely useful for a number of applications, providing large amounts of power that can be used for actuating and driving systems. Hydraulics are also commonly exposed to numerous environmental conditions, often coming into contact with dust, dirt, debris, and other various substances. If these contaminants enter hydraulic cylinders and other assembly components, performance can be lost and such equipment may even begin to face damage. With the use of devices known as wiper seals, cylinders and other components can be protected from contaminants with ease.

A rod wiper is typically situated in a way that maintains a seal on the piston rod when such equipment is stationary or operating. Wiper seals also provide an external static sealing within the groove, further preventing the entrance of moisture and other undesirable particles. Depending on one’s needs.

Function and characteristics of ROD Wiper

There are a number of rod wiper types that can be used, each of which presents varying characteristics and capabilities.

The DTW metric rod wiper is a type that features a D-style single lip, outer radial static sealing lip, and a snap-in design. With the use of an axial static seal lip that is placed on the external top side of the heel, the wiper is tightly fitted in the groove so that contaminants and dust around the outside of the seal are blocked. In the case that the rod wiper surpasses its standard service life or becomes damaged, vents placed on the inside edge of the assembly ensure that the wiper does not become pushed out by pressure and prevents the wiper from trapping pressure. Generally, DTW metric rod wiper equipment can be procured in metric sizes.

The AN or A9S rod wiper is one that follows imperial sizes for housings, built in accordance to AN6231 and ANSI/B93.35M standards. Such wipers feature a squared shoulder and single lip snap-in design, taking advantage of a slotted heel and vents to prevent the trapping of pressure or the component from being pushed out by pressure. This is useful for when the component becomes damaged or is very aged, such as is seen with the DTW metric rod wiper. The AN/A9S rod is commonly found on American equipment due to its sizing and standardization.

The DX imperial rod wiper is one that can fit D-style rod wiper grooves, featuring a snap-in rod design. With a single lip and inside edge venting, such profiles can accommodate the addition of a rubber o-ring which ensures a static sealing contact in the groove. The presence of the o-ring also ensures increased performance even in the case of accidental misalignment, the elasticity and flexibility of the material compensating for issues with deformation. When substances such as tree sap or dried mud is encountered on the device, the profile of the rod will twist and retract so that the dynamic wiper lip’s preload is increased before a stroke.

Beyond such examples, there are a number of other rod types, all of which range from imperial sizes to metric sizes, as well as those that take advantage of metal cladding.
